Volvo 1 – Vauxhall 0

Well it’s been nearly 3 years since I got my Volvo V70,it ticks all the boxes of being big, comfortable, powerful and always in the back of the mind, safe. I’ve tested the first 3 extensively, loading everything from work samples and equipment to furniture (sofas and wardrobes) to the vast array of products required for the tiny human. I’ve travelled over 75,000 miles and enjoyed just about all of them and have towed various trailers even with the car fully loaded.
I’ve finally and sadly this weekend tested the final point, whilst crawling along in slow moving traffic the queue came to a sudden stop, I braked hard and stopped just short of the car in front breathing a very brief sigh of relief before the bang and sudden jerk of the car behind hitting me. We stopped, checked everyone was unhurt and began to survey the damage before exchanging details, it’s this damage survey that is the real point of this post.
My Volvo V70 features a plastic bumper covering the steel body of a soviet tank, the plastic has buckled and sprung away from the body, snapping the clips around the edge, and until confirmed by the bodyshop that appears to be it.
The other vehicle was a Vauxhall Astra, this I am sorry to say did not fair so well. This is only a very brief observation but initial damage report looks like front bumper, grill, bonnet and headlight, the passenger door wouldn’t open so at least the wing is also bucked and possibly the chassis, the fluid leaking from the engine is probably water and so potentially the radiator. I’ll probably never know the full extent or final bill but I suspect it will be more than the Volvo.

Update: The damage to the Volvo was confirmed as being a bumper beyond repair (it’s only plastic and more cosmetic than structural after all) and a broken parking sensor. I never did find out what the cost was or the damage to the other vehicle as the insurance dealt with everything but I’m sure I came off the better.
